    Re: Winter Storm this Weekend

A bit of a different type of storm, this one will have the low pressure system racing up through the Ohio Valley and not up the eastern slopes of the Apps. During the transition late Sat./early Sunday, the snow will probably be the heavy, wet nature. However, that doesn't look to last very long, depending on how quick the cold air rushes and catches the backside of the rain shield. Also with the rain on Saturday and whatever water still around, that could freeze up when the temps drop rapidly behind the front. The main accumulating snows will crank up after that main shield passes and the backside snows move in from Sunday and on. That will be when the low, which will be to our north, starts to strengthen and the northwest flow kicks in really strong, a strong disturbance rotates through, and we get a good feed of moisture off Lake Michigan...combine that with temperatures dropping down into the teens and snow ratios will be really high, which means it won't take much to get good accumulation. Those won't be the "wet" nature, but more lighter and with the high winds expected, could see a lot of blowing and drifting snow, which will make travel dangerous.

    Re: Winter Storm this Weekend

Watches upgraded to warnings across Lee, Wise, Scott, Russel, and Washington (****enson and Buchanan still only under watches, but that's typical of Charleston's NWS to be one the last to upgrade or warn for much anything). Winter storm warnings go from 10 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Tuesday...

A lot of focus on this system but I'd pay attention to the system later in the week, may have an ice threat with it and might be more than advertised here so far (some in KY are really concerned with it). We might be just far enough south, but given the model tendency to underestimate low level cold air and the potential for a snow pack still around here, might be something to not overlook.

Wouldn't be half as bad if people wouldn't act so stupid at the stores, acting like its the end of the world.

I agree that some act ignorant in the stores, but I think some people just want to be better prepared than they were last year. You never know how big this snow is gonna be or if it knocks out the power. No one thought it was gonna be big last year either, I know I didn't.

I don't know about that. Air temp rose 4* from 7PM-10PM, then dropped back to 34*. Unless there's warmer air inside this front, I don't see much rain happening. At least not at our elevation.

    Granted, I'm no weatherman.

It's been all snow/sleet since 12AM. Pavement and grass is white in Pine Camp. 3/8" of slush on the roads.

    Re: Winter Storm this Weekend

Upper level low rotating through Indiana at the moment, can see it well on radar, this will help enhance the snow later today combined with a the northwest flow setting up. Right now we're just ending the main precip ahead and along the front, some will see a bit of a lull before the backside rotates in. There is some snow trying to fill back in behind the prefrontal precip, so it may not quit for some.
